Remote desktop terminal service listen on more than one port ports multiple

Allow Remote desktop to listen on more than one port at a time.

There are times when it would be helpful to have Remote Desktop listen
on more than one port at a time. Microsoft has a knowledge base
article on how to do it. (kb555031)

In order to add the new listening port:

1) Run REGEDIT on your Server.

2) Export the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal
ServerWinStationsRDP-Tcp

3) Edit the REG file and change the name of the key to something like:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal
ServerWinStationsRDP-Tcp-New

4) In the REG file find
PortNumber
and change it to whatever port you want.

5) Import the REG file back to the registry.

Restart might not be necessary

Windows 7 home premium enable classic login logon screen reg hide last user username show

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem]
"dontdisplaylastusername"=dword:00000001

To change the default port for all new connections created on the Terminal Server

Run Regedit and go to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'SYSTEM'CurrentControlSet'
Control'Terminal Server'WinStations'RDP-Tcp

  • Find the "PortNumber" subkey and notice the value of 00000D3D, hex for (3389).
  • Modify the port number in Hex and save the new value.

You can now connect to the new port by using the "old" Windows 2000 Terminal Server client.

A better option is to use the RDP client found in Windows XP, or even better, the newer Windows Server 2003 SP1 RDP 5.2 client.

You'll need to configure your TS client to connect to the new port. Although changing the connection port on the RDP clients is quite easy, you CAN also change the connection port for the TS client. See Related Articles list for more info.
